How the Scheme Works

Collecting Material

ResiLoop follows a phased approach to operating a successful recycling program for resilient flooring, ensuring that collection, processing, and reuse solutions develop in a sustainable and commercially viable manner. As the scheme grows, it progressively covers additional product categories and geographical areas. Given that most resilient flooring products are imported into Australia, the scheme’s continued success relies on identifying and developing commercial end markets to reuse recovered materials. To achieve this, ResiLoop is anticipating a three stage roll-out, starting with installation offcuts before expanding to additional waste streams and, ultimately, the collection of end-of-life flooring products.

The Scheme is funded by a product levy applied to certain products sold Australia-wide. The levy supports material recovery operations, industry engagement and research and development initiatives, funded through our Circular Support Fund. This R&D investment is critical to increasing the volume of material we can recycle by exploring more end uses for additional product categories, increasing recycling capacity and technical capability, allowing expansion of our collection services geographically. ResiLoop is investing for the future. See more about our Funding and Expenditure here Background, Funding & Governance

"Transitioning to a circular economy requires collective effort. By embedding circularity into design, strengthening stewardship frameworks, and investing in end-of-life solutions, Australia can accelerate industry responsibility and build a more resilient and resource-efficient future." Paul Rosenberg Vella, Director, Revert Group

What is collected?

Picture
Stage I – we are currently collecting installation trimmings and stock (and roll) ends from commercial and residential construction for these product categories: Luxury Vinyl Tile, homogeneous (HO) sheet and non-textile backed heterogeneous (HE) sheet. Please see our detailed list of Offcut Criteria here.
Stage II – ResiLoop will aim to introduce collection and recycling solutions for Safety Flooring installation waste and Hybrid/rigid core tile streams if viable reprocessing solutions and end markets for the recyclates are identified, and will expand the geographic range of collection points for materials in line with reuse volumes.
Stage III – This stage will aim to introduce collection and recycling of end-of-first-life materials and all feasible product categories with recycling end markets in Australia. Nearly 60,000 tonnes of post-consumer waste is estimated to be generated annually in Australia. ResiLoop will invest to address these harder-to-recycle waste streams and to service, where feasible, less cost-effective locations.

WHERE MATERIAL IS COLLECTED
ResiLoop operates across both residential and commercial building sectors.
The program is currently collecting in Metro Melbourne, Victoria. View the Collection Points
ResiLoop is actively developing collection initiatives in NSW, regional Victoria, and Queensland, which together account for roughly 80 percent of the waste generated. Register your interest in becoming a Collection Point Get Involved
It is estimated that 68 percent of the resilient vinyl flooring end of life waste stream is generated in urban areas and 32 percent in regional and rural areas. Our focus for the expansion of the scheme is urban areas before extending into regional and rural areas where the cost of transportation back to recyclers is higher.
HOW MATERIAL IS COLLECTED
ResiLoop coordinates a network of Collection Points at the sites of commercial flooring contractors, retailers and flooring accessory suppliers. Offcut materials from ResiLoop members’ products are collected by floor layers using ResiLoop-provided collection bags and then taken to Registered Collection Points. There, the materials are aggregated until ready for transportation to our Recycling Partner.
