What is ResiLoop?
ResiLoop is a not-for-profit scheme backed by major suppliers in the resilient flooring industry to promote a circular economy for floorcoverings in Australia. Initiated by the Australian Resilient Flooring Association (ARFA) in 2021 and established independently in 2024, ResiLoop intends to recover and recycle flooring waste, delivering materials to our recycling partner(s). With a growing support base of product suppliers and collection points, ResiLoop aims to invest in research and development to identify new applications for recycled materials and increased reprocessing capability and capacity, reducing landfill waste and advancing circularity across the industry. ResiLoop will drive action by:
Is the scheme currently operating? Yes. ResiLoop is backed by leading product suppliers, and supported by major retail groups and contractors in the resilient flooring industry. Is flooring waste really such a big issue? Construction and demolition waste is the second largest contributor to landfill in the country, accounting for 5 million tonnes annually. Flooring is one of the waste streams currently not being diverted from landfill. Resilient flooring waste is estimated at 12.5 million square metres a year. That’s about 625 Melbourne Cricket Grounds' worth of waste annually! Why should I get involved? At ResiLoop, we believe that building a circular economy is a collective effort, with a role for everyone in the value chain. By joining our mission, you become part of a collaborative movement dedicated to designing products for circularity, reducing waste at every stage of the life cycle, keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible and advancing sustainability in the resilient flooring industry. Whether you’re a manufacturer, installer, recycler, specifier, builder, retailer or consumer, your involvement contributes to a circular future. Our business participants are leading the way in improving environmental outcomes for the industry and gaining a competitive edge through their circular economy and climate contributions. Who can be involved? ResiLoop is built on the idea that creating a circular economy is a collective effort, with a role for everyone. Whether you're a manufacturer, installer, recycler, specifier, consumer, or industry stakeholder, your involvement contributes to reducing waste and promoting sustainability in the resilient flooring sector. You can engage through Membership or by participating in our initiatives in other ways: Full Member – for flooring suppliers Associate Member (Collection Points) – for contractors and retailers of resilient flooring Collectors – for floor layers Affiliate Members – for our recycling partners Project Partners – for builders and construction sites Supporters – for organisations and individuals who want to contribute to industry-led solutions that don’t fit any other membership category Explore how you can be part of the movement driving circular solutions forward here What You Can Do How do I sign up? For all member/supporter enquiries please contact us via [email protected] Floor layers can sign up directly via our free App on the Google Play and Apple Store. Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.resiloop&hl=en_US Apple Store: apps.apple.com/au/app/resiloop/id6739280534 Is there a direct business case/return on investment for joining the scheme? Your business will directly benefit from joining the industry stewardship scheme and being recognised as a participant. As landfill diversion and responsible material management gain priority across community expectations, policy, and regulation, businesses taking action on recycling will be well-positioned for the future. ResiLoop also helps simplify compliance as we push for ecolabel certifications like Best Practice PVC and and support alignment with green rating tools for buildings and projects, such as Green Star, NABERS, and LEED, which are placing greater emphasis on waste management and circular economy contributions. Plus, for those currently covering waste disposal costs for these materials, there will be a clear financial saving! I install resilient floors. How do I collect and return offcuts? Installers/floor-layers must register with the scheme via our free App (downloadable via Google Play and App Store) and link with a Registered Collection Point that they work with. Collection Points (at Commercial Contractors, Flooring Accessory Suppliers or Retail Stores) will issue ResiLoop collection bags. Collected installation waste is returned to the Collection Point for aggregation. Only ResiLoop Member products are collected. Talk to your contractors about getting involved and see more information here. A Role for Floorlayers See our Resources Hub for more information and videos on how to collect offcuts. Collecting Material I need more bags for collecting offcuts. Where can I get them? A. Collectors can request more bags from their Collection Point in person or via the App. Collection Points can contact us via email [email protected] or request via our Online Portal (ResiLoopportal.resiloop.org.au) How can I arrange a pickup? A. Collection Points can contact us via email [email protected] or request via our Online Portal (ResiLoopportal.resiloop.org.au) How much does it cost to be involved? A levy (per square metre) of relevant products sold, collected from Product Suppliers (Our Members) quarterly (information is collected by an independent auditor to ensure confidentiality of sales data) is the major funding mechanism. The levy amount has been calculated to represent a low-cost impact for the consumer. If all the floors of the average-sized, new home in Australia were fully covered in ResiLoop Member products, the levy would add just $21 to the cost*. Yet it makes a real difference to the scale of recycling we can achieve. *Based on the average size of new homes in Australia, 232.3 sqm, per Australian Bureau of Statistics data (2021-22). For Collection Points, once the business is on board as an Associate Member, ResiLoop provides all collections including collection tools and boxes at no cost. See further information here A Role for Contractors and Retailers Collectors participate at no cost. See further information here A Role for Floorlayers What is the levy actually funding? The money raised through the product stewardship levy funds the logistics involved in collection and tracking of waste and ongoing operations of the scheme. The scheme has been designed to strike a balance between low costs for members (and end users), whilst still have significant recycling capability and the ability to scale. Funding raised also supports our research and development efforts to explore additional opportunities for utilising this valuable material, traditionally considered waste. How can I choose/specify products that enable recycling? By choosing ResiLoop Members’ products, you’re playing a vital role in this initiative. Talk to your Retailer or Supplier about which products are part of the ResiLoop program. See further information here. I’m a Retailer. How do I find out further information for my customers? We have a range of materials for retailers. Please contact us via email [email protected] so that we can send you our information pack. What material is being collected? ResiLoop collects specific classes of Members’ products via our Collection Points only, starting with offcuts from
ResiLoop plans to progressively expand to include other types of resilient floorcoverings following further investment in research and development of suitable end uses for the recyclates. Uplifted, end-of-life floorcoverings will not be collected at this time as we work to resolve contamination and legacy additive challenges. See detailed information here. Offcut Criteria What ResiLoop’s Geographic Coverage? ResiLoop's collection network is currently operating in Melbourne metro. The scheme will expand to regional VIC, NSW, and QLD, covering nearly 80% of the market. As end markets for recycled material develop, ResiLoop will continue to grow into other states.
